Wrestling Falls to #13 Roger Williams, 31-15

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team dropped a 31-15 decision to #13 ranked Roger Williams University on Friday evening at John J. Kelly Gymnasium.

The visiting Hawks improve to 4-0 in dual meet competition on the season, while the Bears fall to 1-2.

Roger Williams captured seven of the ten bouts including a pin by senior Dennis Ferro (Great River, N.Y.) at the 184-pound weight class and a 16-0 (0:45) technical fall victory by freshman Conor Panzarella (Toms River, N.J.) at 165.

BSU freshman 125-pounder Wilson Gomes (New Bedford, Mass.) opened the match by pinning  his opponent 20 seconds into the third period to give the Bears an early 6-0 lead. The win by fall marked Gomes' second of the season.

After the Hawks won the next two bouts, sophomore Riley Tufts (Medford, Mass.) put Bridgewater back on top, 9-7, with a 5-2 decision at 149.

Roger Williams responded with five straight wins to pull ahead 31-9 and clinch the match. Freshman 157-pounder Ryan Grebe (Sound Beach, N.Y.) started the rally with a 12-10 decision while freshman Noah Tandy (West Orange, N.J.) capped it off with a forfeit victory at 197.

BSU freshman Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) picked up a win by injury default in the battle of the heavyweights to round out the scoring.

The Bears are off until after the New Year when they compete at the Scott Viera Invitational hosted by Roger Williams on Sunday, January 6th.
