Wrestling Posts 23-19 Comeback Win over New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team erased a 14-0 deficit as the visiting Bears posted a 23-19 come-from-behind victory over New England College on Tuesday evening at Bridges Gym.

The Bears (1-1) dropped the first three bouts of the evening but rallied to win six of the final seven to take the match.

Sophomore Riley Tufts (Medford, N.J.) got the comeback started with a 12-0 major decision triumph at the 149-pound weight class. A 6-1 decision by sophomore 157-pounder Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) followed by a 17-8 major decision victory by sophomore Fox Maxwell (Wilmington, Mass.) at 165 closed the gap to 14-11.

After the Pilgrims extended their lead with a tech. fall at 174, BSU sophomore Wilfredo David (Chicopee, Mass.) answered with an 8-5 decision at 184 to make the score 19-14.

Sophomore Jerome Williams (Springfield, Mass.) completed the comeback and gave the Bears a 20-19 lead as he pinned his opponent at 197. Freshman heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) put the finishing touches on the dramatic 23-18 victory as her earned a 7-2 decision in overtime.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday as they compete at the Roger Williams Invitational.
