NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's lacrosse team edged visiting Bridgewater State University, 8-6, on Tuesday night at Cadet Memorial Field.

Coast Guard improves to 4-8 on the season, while Bridgewater State falls to 6-4.

Sophomore midfielder Etta Davis (Great Falls, Va.) recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead Coast Guard. Davis was also a force on the draw as she had a game-high five draw controls. Classmate Mel Goins (Peach Tree City, Ga.) and senior attack Carter Sanderson (Stillwater, Minn.) both added a pair of goals for Coast Guard while senior defender Leah Llewellyn (Port Deposit, Md.) grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers to lead the defensive effort.

Sophomore midfielder Emily Hiller (Marion, Mass.) scored two goals and recorded four draw controls to go along with three ground balls to lead Bridgewater State. Senior midfielders Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) and Lisa Moynihan (Norwood, Mass.), freshman attack Jacqueline DeLorey (Westwood, Mass.), and junior attack Hayley White (Dracut, Mass.) added a goal apiece for BSU. Ettridge and DeLorey also registered an assist.

Ettridge opened the scoring for Bridgewater State on a man-up opportunity at 27:01 to give the visitors their first of the game. Coast Guard answered with a three-goal run, extending to the 11 minute mark, with two goals from Sanderson and one from Davis to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage. White scored her goal at 4:22 to bring BSU to within one, but Goins answered with a free-position goal at 3:24 to give Coast Guard a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.

DeLorey and Hiller scored back-to-back goals for Bridgewater State to open the second half and knot the game at 4-4. Coast Guard, however, answered with three straight tallies from Goins, junior attack Erin Mullen (Williamsburg, Va.) and Davis to jump ahead 7-4, as the clock ticked under nine minutes. Moynihan scored at 5:12 and Hiller brought Bridgewater State to within one, 7-6, with 1:15 left to play, but Davis found the back of the net with just 22 seconds remaining to secure the 8-6 victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Lusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) made three saves in her first career start to pick up the win. Sophomore Mary Budri (Falmouth, Mass.) made two saves in relief of Lusk. Budri entered the game after Coast Guard had taken a 5-4 lead.

Junior netminder Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) made 15 saves for Bridgewater State in the setback as she kept the score close. Barner now has 293 saves over three seasons at BSU.

Coast Guard outshot Bridgewater State, 28-13, and held a 10-6 advantage in draw controls.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guards heads to Babson College for a one o'clock NEWMAC clash with the Beavers, while Bridgewater State travels to MASCAC rival Worcester State University to take on the Lancers at noon.
