Manning Leads Women's Lax to 22-13 Win over Mount Holyoke

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore midfielder Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) scored six goals and added two assists to lead the Bridgewater State College women's lacrosse team to a 22-13 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in Bridgewater.

With the win the Bears improve to 9-3 overall, while Mount Holyoke drops to 2-10.  Bridgewater has now won four straight games and seven of their last eight.

Manning increased her season totals to 37 goals and 36 assists for 73 points.  Her 73 points are the fifth highest single-season total in BSC women's lacrosse history.  Manning now needs 12 assists to break Paula Habel's single-season school mark of 47 set in 2002. Habel also holds the Bears single-season scoring mark with 99 points in 2002.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after seven minutes of play only to see that lead quickly disappear as Mount Holyoke reeled off five straight goals to tie the game up at 5-5 with 16 minutes remaining in the first half.  BSC, however, outscored the Lyons 9-3 the rest of the half and then notched the first five goals of the second stanza to put the game out of reach.

Senior midfielders Lauryn Serratore (Norwood, MA) and Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA) tallied four goals apiece for the Bears, while sophomore attack Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY) and freshman attack Patricia Maloney (Walpole, MA) both finished with two goal and two assists.

Sophomore midfielder Peggy Wefald (Granger, IN) paced the Lyons with four goals, three assists and seven draw controls.  Freshman attack Nuala Nissen (Venice, FL) added three goals while also recording three ground balls.

Bridgewater held a 40-34 advantage in shots, as well as a 23-14 edge in draw controls. Manning led BSC with six draw controls.  The Bears converted 5 of 9 free position attempts, while Mount Holyoke finished 3-for-5.

Sophomore goaltender Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) registered 15 saves in goal for the Bears as she picked up her fourth win of the season. Sophomore Mimi Henry (Concord, MA) turned aside 12 shots between the pipes for the Lyons.

Bridgewater State travels to Fitchburg State College on Saturday afternoon for a New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) matchup with the Falcons. With a win, the Bears would capture the NEWLA regular season title outright. Mount Holyoke travels to MIT on Saturday for an 11:30 NEWMAC game with the Engineers.
