Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Elms, 24-3

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College freshman attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) netted a game-high five goals and the Bears had 11 different players score en route to a 24-3 win over the Blazers in Saturday's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game at Leary Field.

Bridgewater State won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 7-3 overall and remained atop the NEWLA standings at 5-0. Elms College lost its fifth straight and fell to 2-7, 1-4 NEWLA.

The Bears took control from the opening draw with nine straight goals over the first 8:58 to build a quick 9-0 lead.

Jones, the reigning NEWLA Rookie of the Week, erupted for four goals - her team and NEWLA-leading 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th of the season - in the opening 30 minutes to help stake the Bears to a 14-0 halftime lead.

Bridgewater State sophomore midfielder Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) netted three goals -  26th, 27th and 28th of the year - and added a pair of assists. Sophomore defender Chelsea Bracchi (Pembroke, MA), sophomore attack Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY), freshman attack Caitlin Young (Holden, MA), sophomore attack Kelly Downs (Hanover, MA), freshman attack Patricia Maloney (Walpole, MA), senior defender Adrienne Berkland (Sharon, MA) and freshman attack Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) all added two goals apiece for the Bears in the winning effort.

Elms College senior midfielder Caitlin Childs (Hingham, MA) scored her team-leading 22nd goal of the year. Senior attack Carrie Allard (Springfield, MA) scored her 11th goal of the season and senior defender Raemarie Josefiak (Springfield, MA) added her seventh tally of the year for the Blazers, who were outshot 41-9.

Sophomore Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) and freshman Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) combined for four stops between the pipes for the Bears.

Elms College returns to NEWLA play at Westfield State on Thursday, April 17. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Bridgewater State returns to action when it hosts NEWLA foe Worcester State on Tuesday, April 15. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
