Women's Lacrosse Drops 17-12 Decision to Wheaton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Behind a six-goal performance by junior attack Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA), the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team knocked off host Bridgewater State College, 17-12, this afternoon from Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

With the win the Lyons improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Bears even up their record at 2-2.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 1-0 advantage five minutes into the game on a goal by senior midfielder Lauryn Serratore (Norwood, MA).  Wheaton however would tally the next three goals to take a lead that they would not relinquish.

Grant potted four of her six goals in the first half as the Lyons went into the halftime break with a 9-5 lead.  She also got he scoring started in the second half finding the back of the net just 52 seconds into the stanza to put Wheaton up 10-5.

Bridgewater pulled to within three goals on three separate occasions in the second half but that would be as close as they would get.

Sophomore attack Brittany King (Georgetown, MA) added four goals and an assists for the Lyons, while senior attack Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME) chipped in with two goals and two assists.

Sophomore Kate Denison (Andover, MA) paced the Lyons on the defensive end with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. 

Serratore finished with a pair of goals to go along with seven ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Senior midfielder Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA) led BSC with three goals, an assist, three draw controls and a caused turnover.

Freshman keeper Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME) picked up the win in goal for Wheaton as she turned aside five shots in just under 20 minutes of action.  Fellow freshman Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA) took over with 10:08 remaining in the first half and registered six saves the rest of the way.

BSC freshman netminder Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) totaled nine saves for the game including seven in the second half.

Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday afternoon as the Bears travel to Salve Regina University for a 4 o'clock non-conference match with the Seahawks.  Wheaton hosts non-conference foe Bowdoin College on Wednesday at 4 PM.
