PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island College women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the young season as the Anchorwomen posted a 48-39 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday evening at the Murray Center.

Sophomore guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, R.I.) punched in a game-high 14 points to lead the Anchorwomen who improve to 5-0.

The visiting Bears fall to 0-4 with the setback. Bridgewater State was paced by senior forward Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass.). Aguiar scored nine points to go along with seven rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Bears scored the first five points of the contest and held an 8-4 lead following a three-pointer by junior guard Nicole Bostick (Taunton, Mass.) with 6:19 remaining in the first quarter. The hosts outscored BSU, 9-3, to close out the first frame and took a 13-11 advantage into the second quarter.

RIC went on a 7-2 run, keyed by five points by junior guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, Mass.), to build a 22-13 lead with 6:26 left in the second quarter.

Five points by Young and four by freshman guard Jamayra Castro (Bellingham, Mass.) helped RIC go into halftime up by 11, 31-20. RIC forced the Bears into 11 turnovers and outrebounded BSU, 31-20, over the first 20 minutes.

A three-pointer by Young gave RIC a 14-point, 36-22, advantage just over a minute into the third quarter and RIC led by 10, 38-28, after three stanzas.

The Anchorwomen led by 12, 45-33, on a Gauvin jumper with 5:28 remaining in the fourth quarter before the Bears mounted a comeback. Four points by Aguiar and a jumper by senior guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) brought the visitors within six, 45-39, with 1:43 left, but RIC freshman guard Abby Phelan (Norton, Mass.) canned a three-pointer to give the hosts some breathing room. After a block by RIC junior forward Ornela Livramento (Pawtucket, R.I.), the Anchorwomen kept possession over the final minute to close out the win.

RIC shot 38 percent (21-for-55) from the field, 46 percent (5-for-11) from three-point range and 25 percent (1-for-4) from the free throw line. BSU shot 33 percent (15-for-46) from the floor, 29 percent (5-for-17) from downtown and 67 percent (4-for-6) from the charity stripe.

The Bears turned the ball over 18 times, while RIC committed 14 miscues. The Anchorwomen also won the rebounding battle, 39-26, with an 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

Gauvin finished with nine points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Livramento chipped in with six points, eight boards, four assists, three blocks and three steals.

Senior guard Olivia DelGrosso (Ledyard, Conn.) had nine points, four boards and two assists for Bridgewater State.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Roger Williams University on Sunday, November 25th at 3:00 PM. Bridgewater State is off until Thursday, November 29th when the Bears host Suffolk University at 7:00 PM.
