BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Kessy Alves (Praia, Cape Verde) broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute of play to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over Mass. Maritime Academy in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Friday night at windy Clean Harbors Stadium.

The Bears improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in the MASCAC with their third straight shutout win. The host Buccaneers fall to 4-10-1 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Alves capitalized on a mishandled ball by the Mass. Maritime goalkeeper just under 11 minutes into the second half. He blocked an attempted clearance from about 12 yards out, and the deflected ball caromed into the back of the net. The goal marked Alves' fifth of the season.

BSU junior netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside seven shots to record his ninth win of the season and third straight shutout (fourth overall). Morgado has not allowed a goal in his last 272 minutes of action.

Mass. Maritime finished with an 18-12 shot advantage as well as a 7-1 edge in corner kick attempts.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Murphy (Mashpee, Mass.) made five saves in the setback for the Buccaneers.

In upcoming action, the Buccaneers entertain Anna Maria College on Monday night at seven while the Bears travel to Babson College on Tuesday evening for a seven o'clock game with the Beavers.
