Men's Soccer Edges Worcester State, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University men's soccer team edged Worcester State University, 2-1, on Friday night at Coughlin Field.

The Bears improve to 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in the MASCAC, while the Lancers fall to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

Zachary Ells (Douglas, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Bears, recording his first goal of the season in the 14th minute. Ells received a pass from Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) and was able to turn and send a shot past the Worcester State goalie.

The Lancers responded in the 36th minute with a goal from Gift Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.). Kalombo dribbled into the box and fired a shot that was turned aside by the Bridgewater State netminder. Kalombo gathered the rebound and sent a second shot past the keeper's outstretched hand to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams went into the half still tied. Both teams had seven shots in the first 45 minutes.

Moran potted the game-winner in the 82nd minute despite the Bears playing a man down. Moran corralled a cross from Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) and beat the Worcester keeper with a shot to the center of the net. The goal marked Moran's team-leading fourth of the season and the 13th of his career.

Bridgewater State goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) earned the win, his sixth of the season, while recording four saves. Lancer keeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) turned aside three shots in the setback.

Shots were even at 13 apiece, while the Lancers held a 7-0 edge in corner kick attempts. The Bears played the final 11 minutes of the contest a player down.

The Lancers will play next in a road game against Becker College on October 11 with kickoff at 4 p.m. The Bears next match will be on Wednesday, October 10 at MIT starting at 7 p.m.

Notes: Three of Moran's four goals this season and eight of his 13 career tallies have been game-winners.
