BRIDGEWATER, Mass.  – Bridgewater State University Director of Athletics, Dr. Marybeth Lamb, announced today that Julia Mauro has been named as the Bears’ new head field hockey coach. Mauro replaces Tia Rogers who resigned following the 2018 season after five seasons at the helm of the program.

Mauro comes to BSU after serving the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at MIT. She was also the head varsity coach at Saint Stephens Episcopal School in Austin, Texas in 2011 and has assisted at numerous high school and college level camps across the country over the last few years.

“We are very excited to have a coach of Julia’s caliber taking the helm of the field hockey program, said Lamb. “Her dedication to the sport, both as a player and a coach, will no doubt push BSU to the top of the Little East standings, and I am confident that the team will be competing for the conference title in the very near future.”

While at MIT, Mauro helped guide the Engineers to the New England Men’s & Women’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title in 2017 and a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. She coached two National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) First Team All-Americans in 2017 and three NFHCA All-New England East Region selections this past season. As a result of the team’s success in 2017, the MIT coaching staff was selected as the NFHCA New England East Region Coaching Staff of The Year.

Mauro, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Old Dominion University in 2007, played four years as a forward for the Division I Monarchs. During her time there, she contributed to a squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on two occasions, captured a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championships, and was the CAA regular-season champions in each of her four seasons.

Along with her degree from Old Dominion, Mauro also earned her Texas Teaching Certification and is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer. Prior to relocating to Massachusetts, she served as the Lead Special Education Teacher for an adult transition program in Kyle, Texas.

A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Julia presently resides in Boston, Massachusetts with her wife, Elizabeth. She currently works in the Boston area as a personal trainer.
