Three Bears Named to Little East All-Conference Field Hockey Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Three Bridgewater State University student-athletes have been selected to the 2018 Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey All-Conference Team which was announced today by LEC Assistant Commissioner, Darryl Konicki.

Senior midfielder Samantha Hayes was voted to the All-Little East First Team by league's 13 head coach, while senior goalkeeper Allison Chappell garnered All-Little East Second Team accolades. Senior defender Katherine McKenna was named as an honorable mention selection.

Hayes is making her third appearance on the All-Little East Field Hockey Team, while Chappell is a first-time honoree. Hayes was named to the second team in 2017 and third team in 2016.

A native of Norwood, Massachusetts, Hayes notched a team-best and career-high 23 goals to go along with five assists for a career-high 51 points in 18 games. She ranks third in the Little East in goals and is tied for second in both points and game-winning goals (5). Hayes also ranks sixth in all of Division III in goals per game (1.28) and eleventh in points per game (2.83).

In 72 games over four seasons at Bridgewater State, Hayes amassed 47 goals (eleven game-winners) and 17 assists for 111 points. She is currently tied for third all-time in program history in goals and ranks fourth in scoring and eighth in assists.

Chappell, who hails from Raynham, Massachusetts, started 15 games between the pipes for the Bears. She recorded seven wins with 128 saves and a 2.35 goals against average in 1041 minutes of work. She ranks second in the LEC in saves and save percentage (.785), and sixth in goals allowed.

In 49 games over four seasons with the Bears, Chappell collected 24 wins, a .755 save percentage and 335 saves in 3135 minutes in net. She currently ranks fifth all time for the Bears in career saves (335). 

McKenna put together a solid campaign as she anchored the BSU defense. The Wilmington, Massachusetts product appeared in all 18 games with 18 starts and a team leading three defensive saves. She sits sixth in LEC this season in defensive saves.

In 59 games over four seasons in the backfield, McKenna tallied one goal and four assists for six points. She has also recorded an impressive 11 deffensive saves.

The BSU field hockey team posted a record of 9-9 on the season with a 6-6 mark in the Little East. Seeded seventh in the LEC Tournament, the Bears dropped a 4-0 decision to #2 seed (and eventual tournament champion) Keene State College in the quarterfinals.
