BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University field hockey team opened the 2017 season with a convincing 6-0 victory over Little East Conference foe Salem State University on Thursday evening at Swenson Field.

Junior midfielder Julianne Kilduff (Bellingham, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist while senior forward Tori O'Dea (South Dennis, Mass.) dished out three assists to pace the BSU offense. Junior netminder Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) made two saves in the shutout effort.

Freshman forward Emma Daly (Foxborough, Mass.) also potted a pair of goals for the host Bears and junior midfielder Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) added a goal and an assist.

Kilduff opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game as she found the back of the net off the rebound of a Hayes' shot.

Hayes made it a 2-0 game in the 15th minute. O'Dea set up the goal with a centering pass and Hayes deposited a shot into the wide open left side of the net.

Just 39 seconds later, Daly potted her first collegiate goal off an entry pass from Hayes. Daly beat the keeper one-on-one with a shot to the right side.

Kilduff extended the BSU lead to 4-0 in the 29th minute as she redirected a shot by O'Dea past the Salem netminder.

Daly knocked home a perfectly executed crossing pass from O'Dea to close out the first half scoring in the 31st minute as the Bears took a 5-0 lead into the intermission.

Junior forward Alexandra Zoebisch (Plymouth, Mass.) redirected a shot by Kilduff into the back of the net just 38 seconds into the second half to put the finishing touches on the 6-0 victory.

Bridgewater held a 28-7 shot advantage for the game.

Sophomore Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) made 12 saves in the setback for the Vikings.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Saturday afternoon at one. The Bears (1-0) travel to the University of Southern Maine to take on the Huskies, while the Vikings (0-3) head to Western Connecticut State University to battle the Colonials.
