Ruben Gonzalez Named MASCAC Baseball Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman second baseman Ruben Gonzalez has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Baseball Rookie of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Gonzalez batted .550 (11-20) with two doubles, three walks, three stolen bases, two runs batted in and seven runs scored in five games for the Bears last week at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Stoughton, Massachusetts product also posted a .583 on-base percentage and a .650 slugging percentage.

Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a run scored in a 6-2 setback to #1 ranked College of Wooster, and was 4-for-5 at the plate with a sacrifice fly, a stolen base, three runs and an RBI in an 8-7 victory in 12 innings over #23 La Roche College.  He also went 4-for-11 with a pair of doubles, three walks, two stolen bases, three runs and two RBI in three games against SUNY Canton.

Through seven games this season, Gonzalez is batting .567 (17-30) with five doubles, three walks, three stolen bases, nine runs scored and five runs batted in. He is also sporting a .588 on base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage. Gonzalez presently leads the MASCAC in hits and ranks second in both batting average and doubles. He is also third among the conference leaders in runs and on base percentage, and fourth in stolen bases. 

The BSU baseball team is currently 2-5 on the season. The Bears travel to Rhode Island College on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Anchormen at 3:30.
