Liam Bell Named MASCAC Baseball Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University freshman second baseman Liam Bell has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Baseball Rookie of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Bell batted .368 (7-19) with a pair of doubles, a stolen base, six runs scored and two RBI in a 3-2 week for the Bears. The Wells, Maine product also posted a .667 slugging percentage and recorded at least one hit in all five games as he has now hit safely in 29 out of 33 games this season.

Bell went 5-for-11 with two doubles, a stolen base, five runs and an RBI in a three-game MASCAC sweep of MCLA. He was also 1-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI in a 7-3 conference setback to Westfield State, and 1-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt in a 4-3 non-conference loss to Brandeis.

In 33 games this season, Bell is batting .379 (47-124) with eight doubles, nine walks, seven stolen bases, 32 runs scored and 19 runs batted in. He is also sporting a .425 on base percentage and a .444 slugging percentage. Bell presently ranks fourth in the MASCAC in hits, run and batting average. He is also tenth in the conference in total bases (55) and tied for ninth in doubles.

Bell is the Bears' third MASCAC Rookie of the Week award winner this season. Classmate Ruben Gonzalez (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the honor on March 18th, while Bell pick up the accolade on April 8th.

The BSU baseball team wrapped up regular season play with an overall record of 16-20 including an 11-10 mark in the MASCAC. The Bears are the #5 seed in this week's MASCAC Tournament and will take on #4 Salem State in an opening round game on Thursday morning (11:00 AM) at Westfield State.
