Volleyball swept by Westfield in MASCAC Match

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State University volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match on Saturday afternoon at the Woodward Center. The Owls won the match by set scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-11.

The host Owls improve to 6-5 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC, while the Bears fall to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Senior middle hitter Brianna Starkey (Rockland, Mass.) led the Owls with 11 kills, a .429 hitting percentage, three digs and five blocks. Senior setter Ally Rega (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a match-high 37 assists while senior libero Lizzie Taylor (Medfield, Mass.) notched a match-best 20 digs to go along with two aces.

Junior setter Casey Holmes (Norton, Mass.) led the way for Bridgewater State with a team high 22 assists to go along with four digs, and one kill. Freshman libero Victoria Caiano (New Bedford, Mass.) registered 11 digs and an ace, while junior outside hitter Abigail Gardner (Holden, Mass.) notched six digs and ten kills. Junior outside hitter Gabryella Serrano (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished with a team high 11 kills.

Westfield held the clear advantage on the day as the Owls finished with 43 kills and just nine attacking errors (.337 hitting %). The Bears notched just 28 kills with 19 attacking errors, and recorded a .080 hitting percentage.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday night at seven. The Bears travel to Lesley University, while the Owls head to Elms College.
