Volleyball Wraps Up Play at Hall of Fame Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Bates College and Amherst College during the second and final day of the Hall of Fame Invitational.

The Bears lost 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11) to Bates and 3-0 (25-5, 25-17, 25-15 ) to Amherst as they went 0-3 at the invitational which was hosted by both Smith College and Amherst. All three of Bridgewater's setbacks were to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams.

In the match against Bates, sophomore middle hitter Sydney Rice (Medway, Mass.) paced the Bears with eight kills, a .353 hitting percentage and three blocks (one solo). Senior outside hitter Kayla Baril (Seekonk, Mass.) added five kills, six digs and two assisted blocks, while sophomore setter Casey Holmes (Norton, Mass.) dished out 17 assists to go along with four digs and a kill. Sophomore defensive specialist Maggie Czarniak (Halifax, Mass.) checked in with 17 digs and the Bears' only ace of the match.

Against Amherst, Baril notched six kills, ten digs, an ace, two assists and an assisted block. Rice recorded five kills and a solo block, while Holmes tallied 17 assists and seven digs. Sophomore outside hitter Abigail Gardner (Holden, Mass.) chipped in with 11 digs and four kills.

Baril was named to the All-Tournament Team as she notched 19 kills, 21 digs and four blocks (one solo) over BSU's three matches.

Bridgewater State (4-14) travels to Lasell College on Tuesday night for a seven o'clock match with the Lasers. The Bears then wrap up regular season play next Saturday morning at 11 as they entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Salem State University.
