Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches at Tri-Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team swept a tri-match hosted by Bridgewater State University on Saturday at the Tinsley Center. The Lyons swept the Bears, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-16), and posted a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-14) victory over Gordon College. In the final match of the day, Gordon posted a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-7, 25-19) win over Bridgewater State.

Wheaton 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-16)

Wheaton Highlights: The Lyons posted a .204 hitting percentage and recorded 14 aces (and eight serving errors)….Senior libero Cathryn MacGregor (North Andover, Mass.) notched 12 digs and a match-high seven aces, while junior setter Becca Houghton (Emmaus, Pa.) filled the stat sheet with 20 assists, ten digs and 3 kills to go along with an assisted block….Junior outside hitter Nikita Selivan (Lexington, Mass.) notched a match-best eight kills….Senior middle hitter Claire Cansler (Newhall, Calif.) checked in with six kills and two assisted blocks while sophomore right side hitter Julia Palomba (San Carlos, Calif.) added six kills, nine digs and four aces.

Bridgewater Highlights: Junior middle hitter Erin Clifford (Hanson, Mass.) paced the Bears with six kills and an assisted block, while senior libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched 13 digs and an aces….Senior outside hitter Kayla Baril (Seekonk, Mass.) contributed five kills and eight digs, and senior setter Picabo Miskiv (Barnstable, Mass.) dished out six assists….The Bears struggled on the attack with just 15 kills and 17 attacking errors (-.024 hitting percentage).

Wheaton 3, Gordon 1 (18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-14)

Wheaton Highlights: The Lyons, who battled back from a set down, posted a .176 hitting percentage and recorded 16 aces (and ten serving errors)…. Houghton once again filled the stat sheet with 27 assists, ten digs, six aces and a pair of solo blocks to go along with a kill, while Cansler checked in with nine kills, two aces and five blocks (four solo)….Sophomore outside hitter Casey Dinga (Windham, N.H.) registered a match-high 12 kills, and MacGregor notched 21 digs and a pair of aces ….Palomba added 11 kills, 12 digs and an ace, while freshman outside hitter Adara Hamilton (Mercer Island, Wash.) posted nine kills, three aces and two assisted blocks.

Gordon Highlights: The Fighting Scots posted a .178 hitting percentage and notched six aces but with nine serving errors….Sophomore setter Ashlyn Gergins (Murrieta, Calif.) paced Gordon with 28 assists, 11 digs, five kills, a solo block and an ace….Junior outside hitter Amanda Snyder (San Jose, Calif.) and junior right side hitter Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished with 11 kills apiece. Snyder added 12 digs, a solo block and a pair of aces, while Tafoya registered three aces and a solo block…Senior outside hitter Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) checked in with nine kills and eight digs.

Gordon 3, Bridgewater State 1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-7, 25-19)

Gordon Highlights: The Fighting Scots posted a dominant .365 hitting percentage and four players finished with double-digit kills….Gergins dished out a match-high 40 assists, while Tafoya registered a match-best 16 kills to go along with two aces….Snyder and sophomore middle hitter Jacque Fitzgerald (Wyantskill, N.Y.) tallied 17 kills apiece with Snyder also notching 15 digs….Freshman outside hitter Marla Batson (Windham, N.H.) added ten kills and junior libero Jenny Curtiss (Larkspur, Colo.) recorded 15 digs and six assists.

Bridgewater Highlights: The Bears posted a .102 hitting percentage and finished with nine aces (and six serving errors)….Miskiv and sophomore setter Casey Holmes (Norton, Mass.) combined for 28 assist with Miskiv handing out 16. Miskiv also notched five aces…..Baril finished with ten kills, while Clifford and sophomore right side hitter Alexis Duarte (Fairhaven, Mass.) added seven apiece and senior outside hitter Grace Stafford (Yarmouth, Mass.) tallied six….Tyros recorded 18 digs and a pair of aces.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Regis College on Tuesday evening for a six o'clock match with the Pride, while the Fighting Scots entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Roger Williams University on Wednesday night at seven. The Lyons host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wellesley College on Tuesday night at seven.
