Volleyball Drops Pair at Cardinal Classic

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during day two of the Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State.  The Bears lost by identical scores of 3-1 to Sage (25-16, 25-14, 32-34, 25-18) and the host Cardinals (27-25, 28-30, 25-12, 25-23).

Bridgewater slipped to 6-5 on the season with the two losses as the Bears finished 1-2 at the tournament.

In the loss to Sage, sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) tallied a team-best 12 kills as well as 16 digs and an ace.  junior middle hitter Julie Hutchins (Bellingham, Mass.) notched nine kills, four blocks (three solo) and one ace.  Sophomore setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) posted 35 assists, eight digs, one ace and an assisted block, while sophomore outside hitter and all-tournament selection Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) finished with nine kills and eight digs. 

In the setback to Plattsburgh, Goncalves paced the Bears with a career-high 21 kills. She also recorded a .463 hitting percentage and added six digs and an assisted block.

Panner set a career-high for a four-set match with 44 assists.  She also tallied seven digs, three kills and a block assist. Hutchins chipped in with 12 kills, two blocks (one solo) and an ace, while Maymon added 11 kills, ten digs, an ace and an assisted block.  Freshman defensive specialist Rachel Ducharme (Taunton, Mass.) registered a match-best and career-high 26 digs to go along with three aces.

With her 79 set assists on the day, Panner reached the 1,000-assist milestone.  She now has 1,004 over her first two seasons at BSU..

The Bears open Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on Tuesday night at home against Westfield State with the match getting underway at six.
