Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team swept a tri-match hosted by Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (4-3) posted a 3-2 win (22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13) over the Blue Jays and completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21) over the host Lyons.

In the win over Saint Joseph, Bridgewater trailed 13-12 in the fifth in deciding set when sophomore middle blocker Sydney Bennett (North Attleboro, Mass.) tied the game with a kill. An attacking error would put the Bears up by one, and sophomore setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) followed with an ace to win the game and the match.

Panner finished with a career-high 46 assists to go along with five aces, four kills, eight digs in the victory over the Blue Jays. Sophomore outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) led all players with a career-best 20 kills as well as an impressive .472 hitting percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) added a personal best 16 kills, while senior Sarah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) registered 19 digs, three kills and once ace, and senior libero Lisa Vega (Milford, Mass.) recorded 23 digs and one ace.  Bennett finished with eight kills and one solo blocks.

Panner filled the stat sheet with 40 assists, 11 digs, five kills, a pair of aces, and two assisted blocks against Mount Holyoke.  Goncalves tacked on 13 kills to finish with 33 on the afternoon. She also added an ace.

Maymon notched a match-best 15 kills to finish with 31 in the tri-match.  Mullarkey chipped in with 18 digs, three kills and an ace, while junior middle hitter Julie Hutchins (Bellingham, Mass.) chalked up seven kills and three assisted blocks. 

In upcoming action, the Bears host Daniel Webster College on Wednesday night at seven.
