Volleyball Opens Campaign with Pair of Setbacks at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team opened the 2014 campaign with a pair of setbacks at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College.  The Bears dropped a 3-0 decision (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) to the host Bullets, and lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-17) to Carnegie Mellon University.

Sophomore setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) and sophomore outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) paced the Bears in the two matches.  Panner tallied 29 assists, three kills and seven digs, including 19 assists in the loss to Carnegie Mellon. Goncalves recorded 13 kills and four assists blocks, including a team best nine kills against the Tartans.

Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) added five kills and six digs in the loss to Gettysburg, while freshman middle hitter Christina Jaros (Plymouth, Mass.) notched three kills and three blocks (one solo).

Sophomore middle hitter Samantha Richner (Hanson, Mass.) finished with three kills and two assisted blocks in the match against Carnegie Mellon.

On Saturday, the Bears will wrap up the tournament with matches against Penn State Harrisburg (Noon) and Alfred University (2:00 PM).
