Mauro Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championships

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Senior distance runner Nicole Mauro (Mashpee, MA) qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:24.82 as she finished in third place at the ECAC Division III Championships host by Harvard on Friday afternoon.

Last week Mauro set the school record in the 5,000 with a time of 17:56.42 at the New England All-Divisions meet at Boston University. Mauro will find out on Sunday or Monday if her time is good enough to qualify her for the national championship meet will be held later this weekend at Ohio Northern University.

Mauro has been impressive throughout the indoor track season as she has broken or helped to break a total of 10 records during the 11 meets that the Bears competed at. They have included the 5,000 (four times), the 3,000 (twice), the one mile run (once), the 4 x 800 medley relay (twice), and the distance medley relay (twice).

Earlier on Saturday, senior Fernando Vieira (Mattapoisett, MA) also competed in the 500 meter dash and broke his own mark in the event. He ran to a sixth place finish (1:06.55) breaking his own record of 1:07.86.

Mauro scored six points for the Bears which was good for 36th place while Vieira notched three points for a 53rd place finish.
