Women's Tennis Falls to Worcester State, 6-3

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in a Little East Conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Wachusett Regional High School courts.

The Lancers improve to 8-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Little East, while the Bears fall to 4-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

The Lancers led 2-1 after doubles play. The top-flight pairing of senior Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) won a tight 8-6 victory, while junior Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) won in a tie-breaker at the second flight, 8-7 (7-5).

Junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the Bears' lone doubles point at the third flight, 8-3.

In singles play, Taylor outlasted BSU freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.), 7-6, 5-7, 10-7, in the battle of the top flight players, while Alves won at the second spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Mullane and junior Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) also won in straight sets at the fifth (6-1, 6-1) and fourth (6-4, 6-1) flights, respectively, for the Lancers.

Senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) and grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) earned straight set singles victories for Bridgewater State. Mills posted a 7-5, 6-1 decision at number three, while Tarantino cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the sixth flight.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears entertain the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University at three, while Lancers host the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 3:30.
