Women's Tennis Blanks Suffolk, 9-0

BELMONT, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season as the visiting Bears blanked Suffolk University, 9-0, on Thursday evening at the Belmont Hill School Courts.

The Bears improve to 1-3 on the season, while the host Rams fall to 0-5.

Bridgewater swept the three doubles matches and six singles flights. The Bears picked up forfeit victories at third doubles and number six singles against a shorthanded Suffolk lineup.

In double play, freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at the top flight, while grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.) breezed to an 8-0 triumph at the second spot.

Nordstrom also recorded a 6-4, 7-5 straight set victory at number one singles, while Mills (6-4, 6-1) and Tarantino (6-2, 6-1) won in straight sets at the third and fourth flights, respectively.

Junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) notched her first win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 straight set decision at the second flight. Sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set triumph at number five.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater State entertains Little East Conference foe Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at one. The match marks the 2019 home opener for the Bears.
