Women's Tennis Posts 5-1 Win over Emerson

DANVERS, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 5-1 decision over Emerson College on Friday afternoon at the St. John's Prep Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 6-6 on the season, while the host Lions fall to 1-2.

The Bears had a 2-1 lead after doubles play, and were able to secure three singles matches to bring the final score to 5-1. Three of the six singles matches were left unfinished due to darkness.

Junior Olivia Sweeney  (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) paired up for an 8-2 decision at third doubles, while senior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) notched an 8-5 win at the top flight.

Junior Alex Weingarter  (Carlsbad, Calf.) and freshman Thea Nagle (Mechanicsburg, Penn.) answered back at second doubles with a 9-8 win for the Lions as the flight came down to a 7-5 tiebreaker.

In singles play, Sweeney was the first secure a win with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set decision at the second flight. Rosa also won in straight sets at number five, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Madison Butkus (Attleboro, Mass.) secured the fifth and deciding point for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory at the sixth spot.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at one as they entertain Little East Conference foe Castleton University. The Lions are off until Sunday, October 14th when they travel to Salem State University to take on the Vikings at 11:00 AM.
