Women's Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision to Roger Williams

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Roger Williams University women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Bridgewater State University on Thursday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season, while the host Bears fall to 2-4.

Roger Williams captured two of the three doubles matches and swept the six singles flights. Singles competition was played in the pro set format due to the start of the match being delayed one hour and 15 minutes due to rain.

In doubles play, RWU sophomore Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) and junior Jessica Magliota (New Rochelle, N.Y.) paired up for an 8-4 win at number one, while juniors Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) earned an 8-2 decision at the second flight. Sophomore Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) gave the Bears' their lone doubles point with an 8-2 victory at the third spot.

Martin, Roche, Spillane and Magliota also earned wins in singles play for the Hawks at the first through fourth flights, respectively. In the match of the day, Spillane edged BSU senior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (8-6).

Freshmen Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) also picked up singles victories for Roger Williams. Gianitsos at the fifth flight, 8-4, and Bennett at number six, 8-3.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears entertain Little East Conference (LEC) foe Western Connecticut State University at one, while the Hawks travel to Endicott College for a noontime Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match with the Gulls.
