Women's Tennis Posts 7-2 Little East Win over UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team recorded a 7-2 victory over UMass Boston in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Wednesday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Little East, while the host Beacons fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater swept the three doubles flights and captured four of the six singles matches.

In doubles play, senior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 win at first doubles, while the second flight tandem of junior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) and sophomore Madison Butkus (Attleboro, Mass.) also posted an 8-4 decision. Sophomore Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 triumph at number three.

In singles competition, Sweeney, Tarantino, Gray and Rosa all won in straight sets for the Bears at the second through fifth flights, respectively.

Junior Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) and senior Baila Mir (Somerset, Mass.) each earned three-set, super tie-breaker victories in singles play for UMass, Gauthier at the first fight and Mir at number six.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Roger Williams University in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon at three.
