BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Rhode Island College women's tennis team clinched the Little East Conference (LEC) regular season title with a 6-3 victory over host Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The visiting Anchorwomen remain unbeaten as they improve to 13-0 on the season and 7-0 in the Little East. The Bears fall to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
RIC led 2-1 after doubles play and captured four of the six singles flights to win the match.
Senior Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) teamed with freshman Laurel Ten Eyck (Warwick, R.I.) for an 8-4 win at first doubles for the Anchorwomen, while freshmen Grace Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Victoria Vittori (New Bedford, Mass.) held on for a 9-7 decision at number three.
Reilly, sophomore Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, R.I.), senior Laura Nastasi (Smithville, N.J.) and freshman Hailey Raskob (North Smithfield, R.I.) all won in straight sets in singles play for RIC at the first, third, fourth and fifth flights, respectively. Braganca's victory came down to a second set tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8).
BSU senior Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) continued her dominant play in the Little East as she posted a 6-2, 6-0 straight set win at second singles and paired with classmate Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) for an 8-6 triumph at second doubles. Roman, who has now won 29 straight singles matches versus Little East opponents, is 36-2 all-time in singles competition and 37-2 in doubles play against Little East opponents.
Bridgewater State also received a 6-1, 6-1 straight set singles win from freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) at the sixth flight.
After the match, the Bears honored seniors Roman, Scagnelli, Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.). The four seniors played in their final regular season home match.
Both teams wrap up regular season play later this week. The Bears travel to non-conference foe Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Lions, while the Anchorwomen host Little East rival Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon at one.
