Women's Tennis Posts 8-1 Win over Western Connecticut

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team battled to an 8-1 victory over visiting Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears, who swept the three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights, improve to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Little East. The Colonials fall to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Bridgewater State received doubles victories from seniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) at number one, 8-1, and seniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) at the second flight, 8-0. BSU's third flight tandem of sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and junior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) won by default.

In singles play, Roman won in straight sets at the second flight, 6-1, 6-1, while Scagnelli also recorded a straight set victory at number three, 6-1, 6-2. Strickland battled back from a set down to post a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 triumph at the fourth spot. Gray won in a second set tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), at number five, while freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) earned a win by default at the sixth flight.

Sophomore Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) notched the Colonials' lone point with a 7-5, 6-1 straight set win at number one singles.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain non-conference foe Emerson College on Friday afternoon at three. The Colonials are off until next Monday afternoon at four when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-league match with the Rams.
