Women's Tennis Downs Salem State, 8-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Salem State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup on Monday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 6-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Little East, while the Vikings fall to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Bridgewater led 2-1 after doubles play. Seniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) posted an 8-3 win at the second flight, while sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 victory at number three.

Salem's top doubles pairing of senior Madeline Allair (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Meredith Macdonald (Lynn, Mass.) battled back from 6-3 down to record an 8-3 win for the Vikings' lone point of the match.

In singles play, Roman earned a 6-3, 6-1 straight set decision at the second flight, while freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) posted a 6-2, 6-1 straight set triumph at number six to give the Bears a 4-1 lead. Senior Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win in the battle of the top singles players.

Gray (6-1, 6-3) and Scagnelli (6-2, 6-4) also won in straight sets for the Bears at the fifth and third flights, respectively.

Senior Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) capped off the scoring with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 victory at fourth singles. She trailed 7-1 in the super tie-breaker before rallying for the win.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday afternoon. Bridgewater State entertains the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University at three o'clock, while Salem State travels to Worcester State University for a 3:30 match with the Lancers.

Notes: Roman is 33-2 all-time in singles competition and 34-2 in doubles play against Little East opponents. She has won 26 straight singles matches versus Little East opponents.
