Women's Tennis to Take on Colby-Sawyer in NCAA Tournament First Round

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team will take on Colby-Sawyer College in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament. Pairings for the 49-team national tournament were announced on Monday afternoon.

Bridgewater will face Colby-Sawyer in first round action on Friday, May 12th at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Match time is slated for 1:00 PM. The winner of the match will advance to face No. 8 Bowdoin on Saturday, May 13th at noon.

The other Friday first round match is between No. 22 MIT and Gwynedd Mercy University. The winner will play seventh-ranked Wesleyan University on Sunday.

The Bears (12-5) are making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven years and fifth overall.  The Chargers (16-5) are in the tournament for the fifth straight year and sixth overall.

Under the guidance of Head Coach David Purpura (1st Year), Bridgewater earned the automatic qualification (AQ) into the NCAAs by virtue of winning the Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament this past fall. The Bears have captured five Little East Tournament titles since 2007 and three over last five years.

Colby-Sawyer advanced to the NCAA Tournament by claiming its fifth straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC)/North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover crown.

Friday's match will be the eighth meeting between the Chargers and Bears with Colby-Sawyer holding a 5-2 advantage. Bridgewater State won the last meeting in 2014 by a score of 7-2.
