Women's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to RIC in Little East Semifinals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University Bears dropped a 5-2 decision to host Rhode Island College in the semifinal round of the 2014 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.

Freshman Kim Daigle (Sterling, Mass.) earned the decisive victory at the No.2 singles for the second-seeded Anchorwomen (14-1) who advance to face undefeated Plymouth State University, the tournament's top seed, on Saturday.

The third-seeded Bears, who saw their streak of six straight LEC championship match appearances come to an end, wrap up the 2014 campaign with an overall record of 9-4.

Bridgewater led 2-1 after doubles play with freshman Alisha Silva (East Taunton, Mass.) teaming with senior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) for an 8-4 win at the top flight, and the freshman tandem of Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) posting a 9-7 victory at number three.

RIC avoided the sweep in doubles play when junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) and sophomore Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) battled to a 9-8 victory in a second flight match which was ultimately decided by a 7-1 tie-breaker.

Campanella earned a 6-0, 6-2 straight set victory at No. 1 singles to knot the score at 2-2. The Anchorwomen took the 3-2 lead when Reddy also won in straight sets at the fourth flight, 6-1, 6-1.

Junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I.) extended the RIC lead to 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No.5, before Daigle sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the second slot.

In the unfinished singles flights, Silva was leading 5-4 in the first set at No. 3, while RIC sophomore Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, R.I.) was up a set (6-4, 1-1) at No. 6.
