Women's Tennis Edged by Johnson & Wales, 5-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season as the visiting Wildcats posted a 5-4 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats improve to 5-0 with the win, while the host Bears slip to 2-1.

JWU trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but rallied to win four of the six singles flights to take the match.

Junior Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) won in straight sets at the top singles flight, 6-2, 6-3, and teamed with sophomore Morgan Thompson (Fargo, N.D) for an 8-5 victory at first doubles to lead to the way for the visitors.

BSU junior Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and senior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) picked up the Bears' two singles points as they both won in straight sets.  Vautrin earned a 7-5-6-4 decision at the second flight, while Eramo cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fifth spot.  Vautrin and Eramo also team up for an 8-6 triumph in doubles play at the second flight.

The freshman combination of Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) posted an 8-2 win at third doubles to round out the scoring for the Bears.

Johnson & Wales also received singles wins from junior Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Height, N.Y.), sophomore Emily Glass (Sterling, Ct.) and freshman Taylor Klein (Johnson, N.Y.) at the third, fourth and sixth flight respectively. Glass (6-1, 7-5) and Klein (6-1, 6-2) both won in straight sets, while Piperis went to a three-set tie-breaker (5-7, 6-1, 10-6) in the final and deciding match of the day against BSU freshman Alisha Silva (East Taunton, Mass.).

The Bears open Little East Conference play on Saturday on the road against Salem State University. The match is slated to get underway at 1:00 PM.  The Wildcats entertain non-conference foe UMass Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon at 3:30.
