Women's Tennis Places Fourth at Grass Court Doubles Tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team finished in fourth place at the 30th Annual Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Sunday.

BSU's senior tandem of Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) and Hayley Perron (Plympton, Mass.) won the Flight A Consolation.  After dropping their first match of the day, Flynn and Perron defeated their opponents from Curry College, 8-5, and then posted an 8-3 victory over the UMass Dartmouth team of Maggie LeBrun and Mollie McCaffrey in the consolation round final.

Senior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) and junior Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) went 1-1 out of Flight B.  Eramo and Vautrin won 8-4 in the quarterfinals before dropping an 8-1 decision to Lindsay Benoit and Cristina Szepanski of Nichols College in the semifinals.

The Bears' rookie tandem of Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) recorded a 1-1 mark out of Flight C.  Roman and Scagnelli posted an 8-5 victory in the quarterfinals before falling 8-3 to Ashley Dallaire and Daniela Saldarriaga of Nichols in the semifinals.

Colby-Sawyer, Holy Cross, and Nichols finished the day with 12 points apiece and each had claimed a flight championship. The Chargers claimed the team title with their 3-2 record in head-to-head matches with the Crusaders and Bison.  Bridgewater was next in the standings followed by host Salve Regina in fifth place, UMass Dartmouth in sixth and Curry in seventh.

The BSU women's tennis team is back in action on Tuesday afternoon when the Bears host Johnson & Wales University at 3:30.
