Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to Worcester State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Worcester State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.

The host Lancers improve to 8-7-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in the MASCAC, while the Bears fall to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Worcester State is seeded third in next week's MASCAC Tournament and will host #6 Fitchburg State University in a first round game on Tuesday afternoon at one. Bridgewater State is the #4 seed and will entertain #5 Framingham State University on Tuesday night at seven.

All four goals in the game came in the first half.

The Bears struck first in the fourth minute as senior Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) found the back of the net by chipping a shot past the Worcester netminder. The goal marked Sanders' fifth of the season.

The Lancers would respond with three unanswered goals to close out the opening stanza.

Junior Madison Rotti (Rutland, Mass.) found the net in the 17th minute off a cross from senior Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.). The second Worcester goal came three minutes later as LeBlanc netted one off of a cross from junior Megan Gurlitz (Auburn Mass.). The final goal of the game came from junior Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) who beat the Bears' defense to put the Lancers up 3-1 in the 35th minute.

The second half became a defensive battle as both teams were held scoreless.

The Lancers finished with a 16-14 shot advantage as well as a slight 4-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Junior Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) made five saves between the pipes for the Lancers to earn her fifth win of the season. Senior netminder Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) turned aside four shots in the setback.
