Women's Soccer Posts 4-1 Win over RIC

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's soccer team received goals from four different players as the Bears cruised to a 4-1 victory over Rhode Island College on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.

The Bears, who scored just one goal over their first two games, improve to 1-1-1 on the young season, while the Anchorwomen fall to 1-4.

Bridgewater State got on the board in the seventh minute when they capitalized on a RIC turnover deep in the Anchorwomen's side of the field. Senior forward Taylor Loyd (Halifax, Mass.) headed home a crossing pass from junior forward Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.).

The Bears struck again quickly as senior midfielder Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected a loose ball in the box and fed a pass to junior forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.). Vincent then buried a shot from five yards out for the 2-0 advantage with 37:25 left in the first half.

BSU made the score 3-0 in the 21st minute as junior Kaitlyn Bongarzone (Mansfield, Mass.) connected on a free kick from 50 yards out.

The visiting Bears took the three goal lead heading into halftime with each team recording eight shots in the opening stanza.

Senior defender Kassidy Campbell (Norton, Mass.) extended the BSU lead and put the game well out of reach with an unassisted tally at the 75-minute mark. The goal marked the first in the collegiate career of the Bears' outstanding defender.

RIC got on the board in the 77th minute when Madyson Christian (Douglas, Mass.) blasted in a shot from 15 yards out after a crossing pass from junior midfielder Christina Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.). Junior midfielder Katherine Carrillo (Central Falls, R.I.) also earned an assist on the play for the Anchorwomen after getting the play started by intercepting the ball from Bridgewater State in the defensive end.

That would be all the scoring for the game as Bridgewater State took the 4-1 victory.

BSU junior goalkeeper Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) notched five saves to record her first collegiate win.

Junior goalkeeper Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded one save and allowed three goals for RIC while sophomore Carissa Gaglione (West Warwick, R.I.) had five saves and allowed one goal in the setback for the Anchorwomen.

Bridgewater State tallied 15 shots in the game while the Anchorwomen finished with 17. Both teams had three corner kicks in the contest.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Southern Maine for a Little East Conference contest on Saturday at noon. Bridgewater State entertains non-conference foe Wheaton College on Thursday night at seven.

Notes: Campbell has played and started in all 60 games since arriving at Bridgewater State as a freshman in 2015.
