Women's Soccer Blanks Mass. Maritime, 7-0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomores Amelia Burke (Plymouth, Mass.) and Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals and an assist for five points to lead Bridgewater State to a 7-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Goals by seniors Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the opening 6:29 of action staked the visiting Bears (10-5, 5-1 MASCAC) to an early 2-0 advantage, and Burke collected her markers in the 25th and 42nd minutes of play to extend that margin to 4-0 at the break.  Sanders tallied twice in the opening 8:48 after intermission to give Bridgewater State a 6-0 lead, and junior Kellsie Mitchell's (Bristol, R.I.) goal in the 78th minute accounted for the visitors' final margin.

Sanders, who is tied with Pepin for the team lead in goals with eight, has scored all eight of her goals over the last nine games.

Mitchell added an assist to her marker in finishing with three points on the night for the Bears, who received single helpers from junior Caitlin Rowley (Lakeville, Mass.) and sophomore Allison Aldred (Saugus, Mass.).

Senior Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Bridgewater State by making a pair of first half saves, while sophomore Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) played the second half but was not tested as the duo combined on the shutout.

Sophomore Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) suffered the setback in net for the host Buccaneers (4-8, 1-5 MASCAC) with four stops over the first 63-plus minutes of play. Freshman Mikayla Houlihan (Middleboro, Mass.) recorded eight saves in the final 26-plus minutes of action in goal for Massachusetts Maritime.

The Bears registered 33 of the 36 overall shots on the night (19-2 on goal) and took all six corner kicks in the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to East Boston, Mass. on Monday evening to take on Suffolk in a non-league outing beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State heads into Boston on Tuesday evening for a non-league clash with UMass Boston that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
