Wrestling Opens Season with 31-10 Loss to Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team opened the 2018-2019 season with a 31-10 loss to visiting University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at John J. Kelly Gymnasium.

The visiting Huskies won seven of the ten bouts including a pin (4:08) by sophomore Austin Shorey (Lebanon, Maine) at the 149-pound weight class and a 15-0 technical fall triumph by junior Josh Smith (York, Maine) at 174.

Sophomore captain Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) earned a 12-1 major decision victory at 157 to lead the way for Bridgewater State. The Bears also received a pair of wins by decision from sophomore 165-pounder Fox Maxwell (Wilmington, Mass.) and freshman heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.). Maxwell downed his opponent, 9-4, while Higgins won his first collegiate match, 8-5.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to New England College to take on the Pilgrims at seven. The Huskies compete at the Roger Williams Invitational next Saturday with the tournament getting underway at 9:30 AM.
