Wrestling Splits Tri-Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team split a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted by Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears (2-2) dropped a 33-14 decision to Roger Williams University before posting a 28-21 victory over host Western New England.

In the 33-14 setback to Roger Williams, freshman Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) earned a win by fall at 141 as he pinned his opponent just four seconds before time expired in the first period.

Sophomore Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.) posted an 18-3 technical fall victory at 184, while senior Tom Arseneault (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded a 4-1 decision in the battle of the heavyweights.

The Bears trailed 16-3 after four bouts against Western New England but rallied to win five of the last six matches. A 13-1 major decision victory by senior 157-pounder Eric Kerr (Lynnfield, Mass.) followed by back-to-back-to back pins by sophomore Declan Heaslip (Dedham, Mass.) at 165, freshman Wilfredo David (Chicopee, Mass.) at 174 and Oberlander at 184 gave Bridgewater a 25-16 lead. After a tech. fall narrowed the gap to 25-21, Arseneault closed out the match with a 1-0 win at heavyweight to secure the 28-21 triumph.

Winn finished 2-0 on the afternoon as he also recorded a 7-3 decision at 141 over his opponent from Western New England.

Oberlander (13-6) and Arseneault also both went 2-0 on the day. Arseneault was making his season debut after missing the first half of the season due to injury.

The Bears travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday for the Jim Aguiar Invitational.
