Wrestling Competes at Northeast Regional Championships

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Members of the Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed during day one of the 2015 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships held on Saturday at Roger Williams University.

Sophomores Anthony Cote (Danbury, Conn.), Daniel Quinn (Quincy, Mass.) and Paul Sughrue (Methuen, Mass.) each went 1-2 on the day to lead the Bears.

Following a first round setback, Cote garnered a 24-8 (5:19) technical fall victory over Zachary Stevens of Southern Maine in the consolation round of the 165-pound weight class. He then dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Clay Callahan of Plymouth State.

Quinn pinned Steve Maldonado of Norwich University in the first period (5:47) of the opening round of the heavyweight bracket. Quinn fell to seventh-seeded Mark Howard of Coast Guard in the second round, before dropping an 8-2 decision to Ben Wertz of Williams College in the consolation bracket.

Seeded third, Sughrue posted a 10-1 major decision win over Alex Stewart of Norwich in his first bout of the day at 133 before dropping his next two matches, 9-4 and 6-5, to Austin Sisco of Western New England and Paul Fields of Cortland. Sughrue re-aggravated an injury which hampered him in the final two matches.

The Bears did not have any wrestlers advance to the second and final day of the regional on Sunday.
