Wrestling Falls to #18 Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The visiting Bridgewater State University wrestling team dropped a 50-0 decision to #18 Johnson & Wales University in a Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) contest at the Wildcat Center on Wednesday evening.

The host Wildcats posted five pins in the match as well as a technical fall victory.

Leading 3-0, JWU reeled off three straight pins including one in a time of 2:46 for senior 141-pounder Mike Ferinde (Nutley, N.J.), the tenth ranked wrestler in the nation in his weight class.  Juniors Joao Vicente (East Providence, R.I.) and Joey Gaccione (High Point, N.J.) also had pins for the Wildcats at 133 and 149, respectively, during that stretch to extend the lead to 21-0.

Junior Gideon Yim (Vernon Hills, Ill.) notched a 17-2 tech fall victory at 157 followed by another pin fall victory by sophomore Dan McBrinn (Suffern, N.Y.) at 165 to push the lead to 32-0.

Later in the match, junior heavyweight Phillip Kelly (North Quincy, Mass.) capped off the evening with a win by fall in just 25 seconds to give the Wildcats the 50-0 victory.

Johnson & Wales is now 1-0 on the year and 1-0 in the PWL, while Bridgewater State drops to 0-2 on the year and 0-2 in league play.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, December 13th when they travel to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for the Mariner Duals starting at 10:00 AM.  The Bears are off until January 4th when they head to Western New England University for a tri-match with the Golden Bears and the University of Southern Maine starting at one.
