GORHAM, Maine -- Bridgwater State College senior 184-pounder Jim Quinlan (Methuen, MA)and sophomore 149-pounder Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) will be heading to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Tournament after winning their respective weight classes at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships on Sunday.
The Bears finished in fifth place at the championships with 80 points. BSC finished behind Springfield College (89), Williams College (105.5), Johnson & Wales University (116) and tournament champion Rhode Island College (121).
Cammisa will be making his second straight NCAA Tournament appearance as he also advanced last season after winning the New England title at 149 as a freshman. Cammisa (21-2) won all four of his bouts over the weekend while also receiving a first round bye. Today in the winner's bracket final, he defeated Nick Miragliuolo of Williams College, 7-3, and then beat him again in the first championship bout by a margin of 10-0 to capture the 149-pound title.
Quinlan was a perfect 5-0 over the weekend. He defeated conference rival Elliot Smith of Springfield College in the winner's bracket final, 8-2, and then knocked off Smith again in the first championship bout by a score of 4-0 to earn his first New England title and first trip to the NCAAs. Quinlan raised his all-time BSC career win total to 134 as he heads to the national tournament with a record of 28-3 on the season.
Senior heavyweight Tim Ferreira (Danbury, CT), junior 125-pounder Eric Rosado (Foxboro, MA) and freshman 197-pounder Andrew Frazer (West Hartford, CT) also earned All-New England honors for the Bears as they all finished among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Ferreira went 3-0 on Saturday, but lost to top seed Sean DeDeyn of Johnson & Wales in the winner's bracket final this afternoon. Ferreira, who wraps up his outstanding career at Bridgewater State with 103 win, was then pinned by Glenn Geesman of MIT in the in the loser's bracket final as he finished in third place.
Rosado (21-12) posted a fifth place finish at 125 as he went 4-2 over the weekend. The rookie Frazer (16-11) registered three wins at the tournament before falling, 2-1, in the fifth place match to Greg Dussol of Springfield College.
