WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College wrestling team swept a tri-match with AIC and host WPI this afternoon in Worcester.
The Bears (12-5) rallied from a 14-0 deficit to defeat AIC, 22-18, and then completed the sweep with a 23-10 victory over WPI.
Trailing 18-15 in the opening match with AIC with only two bouts remaining, senior Jim Quinlan (Methuen, MA) earned a 10-1 major decision in the 197-pound weight class and senior heavyweight Tim Ferreira (Danbury, CT) followed that up with a 4-1 decision to give BSC the come-from-behind victory.
Freshman Ethan Raymond (Middlebury, VT) got things going for the Bears with a second period pin in the 149-pound weight class. Three straight decisions put BSC on top, 15-14, before AIC reclaimed the lead with a major decision win at 184.
In the win over WPI the Bears jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead thanks in large part to a pin by sophomore Jack Attaya (Milton, MA) at 141. After WPI closed the gap to 9-7, freshman Mike White and senior Anthony D'Amico (Shrewsbury, MA) increased the lead to 15-7 with a pair of decision wins at 165 and 174 respectively.
Quinlan and Ferreira put the finishing touches on the match by winning the final two bouts of the afternoon. Quinlan breezed to an 18-2 technical fall win at 197 and Ferreira earned a 7-5 victory in the battle of the heavyweights.
Ferreira now has 97 career victories as he closes in on the 100-win milestone. Only three grapplers in BSC wrestling history have reached the milestone including Quinlan who is the Bears' all-time leader (127 wins).
