McDonough Ties Assist Mark in 16-6 Win over Mass. Maritime

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore attack Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) tied a school record with ten assists as the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-6 victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday night in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match-up at Swenson Field.

The host Bears improve to 9-5 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

McDonough, who also scored a goal, equaled BSU Hall of Famer Shannon Manning's single-game assist mark set back in 2008 versus Becker College.

Junior midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior attack Gabby Reinold (Braintree, Mass.) added four goals apiece for the Bears, while freshman midfielder Emily Hiller (Marion, Mass.) checked in with three markers.

Bridgewater led 9-4 at the break. Ettridge netted three goals over the first 30 minutes, while Reinold notched a pair. McDonough assisted on seven of the Bears' first nine goals.

The two teams were held scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. The Bears finally broke the second-half ice on a Hiller tally with 14:36 remaining. The goal sparked a 4-0 BSU run as the hosts opened up a 13-4 lead with 11:21 left to play. After the Bucs cut the deficit to 13-5, back-to-back tallies from Ettridge and sophomore attack Hayley White (Dracut, Mass.) gave Bridgewater a ten-goal cushion (15-5) with 7:37 showing on the scoreboard.

MMA freshman attack Anna Deely (Marstons Mills, Mass.) potted her third goal of the night to make it a 15-6 game. McDonough then tied Manning's single-game record when she set up Reinold with 2:28 remaining to put the finishing touches on the 16-6 victory.

Deely paced Mass. Maritime with three goals and an assist, while senior attack Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) dished out four assists.

Bridgewater held a 34-15 shot advantage for the game as well as a 15-5 edge in draw controls. Ettridge led all players with a career-high nine draws.

BSU sophomore Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) made 11 saves to record her ninth win of the season between the pipes. Senior netminder Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside 13 shots in the setback for the Buccaneers.

Senior midfielder Haley Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) led all players with four caused turnovers, while McDonough forced three turnovers to go along with three draws and a team-best five ground balls.

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Friday evening. The Bears travel to Fitchburg State University for a five o'clock game with the Falcons, while the Buccaneers entertain the Trailblazers of MCLA at six.

Notes: McDonough now has 41 assists on the season which marks a career single-season high. She recorded 39 assists as a freshman in 2017....McDonough is currently sixth among the Bears' single-season assist leaders.
