Women's Lacrosse Falls to MIT, 11-7

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior attack Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif.) registered four goals and three assists to lead the visiting MIT women's lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at rain-soaked Swenson Field.

The Engineers, who dominated play in the second half, improve to 4-5 on the season with the win. The host Bears fall to 7-3 as their four-game winning streak came to an end.

Junior attack Ana Flooks (Weston, Conn.) added three goals and a helper for MIT, while junior attack Cecilia McCormick (Islip, N.Y.) checked in with three goals. Senior goalkeeper Eva Boal (Princeton Jct., N.J.) made six saves to record her third win of the season.

Sophomore attack Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with two goals and an assist, while sophomore netminder Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside a career-high 14 shots.

The Bears led 4-2 at the break as Barner made ten saves over the first 30 minutes. McDonough scored twice for Bridgewater State in the opening stanza, while junior midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior midfielder Brooke Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) also found the back of the net. Young and senior midfielder Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) scored for MIT in the first half.

After Young opened the second-half scoring to make it a one-goal game, the Bears responded with back-to-back tallies from senior attack Gabby Reinold (Braintree, Mass.) and junior attack Mackenzie Manning (Hingham, Mass.) to push the lead up to 6-3. The Engineers then reeled off five straight goals in a span of roughly 6 ½ minutes to take an 8-6 lead with 14:18 remaining. Young and Flooks notched two goals apiece during the spurt.

BSU freshman attack Emily Hiller (Marion, Mass.) found the back of the net with 12:16 left to play to put an end to the run, but Young and McCormick combined for three goals in a 4 ½ minute stretch to give the Engineers a comfortable 11-7 advantage as the clock ticked under four minutes.

Bridgewater did not manage shot over the final six minutes as the Engineers came away with the victory.

MIT finished with a decided 40-19 shot advantage for the game, while draw controls were even at ten apiece. Notarangelo led all players with five draws, while McDonough registered four.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to Framingham State University for a ten o'clock MASCAC game with the Rams, while the Engineers entertain NEWMAC rival Wellesley College at one.
