Women's Lacrosse Falls to Wheaton, 19-8

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team posted a 19-8 win over non-conference rival Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

Senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine), junior Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt.) and freshman Katie Peters (Medway, Mass. all registered hat-tricks to lead the Lyons.

Sabol and Jenquine both added an assist to their stat lines, while junior Allie Bush (Kennbunk, Maine) paced all student-athletes in the contest with five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Jenna Tewksbury (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine)tallied two goals apiece, while sophomores Hannah Gasperoni (Hampton, N.H.) and Giovanna Bishop (Portland, Ore.), junior Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) and freshman Megan Hemmerlein (Contoocook, N.H.) rounded out the scoring for the Lyons with solo strikes.

Junior Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) and sophomores Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.) and Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) guided the BSU attack with two goals each. Junior Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) and freshman Brooke Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.)chipped in with one goal, respectively. Senior Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) facilitated the offense with a team-high two assists. Geary led the Bears with four draws and a pair of caused turnovers. 

Wheaton held a 41-17 advantage in shots including a 32-13 edge in shots on goals. The Lyons also posted a 23-14 differential in ground balls, a 17-12 margin in draw controls and a 16-4 edge in caused turnovers.

The Lyons produced a quick 3-0 lead over the opening 6:10 of the matchup receiving unassisted goals from Mallis (26:01), Tewksbury (25:19) and Cohen (23:50). Wheaton is 3-0 this season when scoring first.

King countered for BSU at the 22:51 mark as she found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the year off a nice pass from Yowell. Wheaton then responded with a 3-0 run to make it 6-1, before Renauld registered her 13th goal of the season (and 100th career point) at 14:02 to cut the deficit to four (6-2).

Wheaton closed out the first half by outscoring the visitors 5-1 for an 11-3 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Blue and White fashioned a slight advantage in shots at 15-11 and went 2-for-3 on free position attempts to close out the victory. All eight of Wheaton's goals in the final stanza came from different scorers, while Bush, Sabol, Jenquine and Tewksbury all dished out assists.

BSU sophomore goalkeeper Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped a game-high 13 shots in the loss. Forman has recorded ten or more saves in every game this season for the Bears including a season best 19 against Salve Regina on March 17.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass.) made one save in the first half to earn the win (4-3). Freshman Molly Witten (Bethesda, Md.) turned away two shots, while classmate Galicia Rothe (Key Biscayne, Fla.) notched two saves including her first collegiate save with 22-seconds remaining in the contest.

Wheaton (4-4) hosts Smith College on Wednesday, March 25 in its New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener at 7 p.m. BSU (2-3) takes on Eastern Connecticut State University next Tuesday at home at 6 p.m.

Lyons' head coach Emily Kiablick earned her 100th career coaching win today. Kiablick compiled 39 victories with the Roger Williams lacrosse program and now has 61 wins at Wheaton.
