Women's Lacrosse Downs Framingham to Go Unbeaten in NEWLA Play

Framingham, Mass. – Seniors Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.), Courtney Lennon (Medfield, Mass.) and Patricia Maloney (Walpole, Mass.) scored five goals apiece to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 24-6 win over the Framingham State Rams in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Bears improve to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the NEWLA.  The 15 wins ties the Bears' single season record originally set in 2008 and equaled last year.  Bridgewater will be the top seed in the NEWLA Tournament for the fourth straight year and will host fourth seeded Westfield State in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

Also with the win, BSU Head Coach Erika Smith tied Josh Hexter's program record of 72 coaching victories. Hexter posted a 72-42 (.632) mark in seven seasons from1998 to 2004, while Smith is 72-31 (.699) since taking the reins in 2006.

The Bears led 6-0 midway through the first half before Framingham sophomore Louie Rijo (Salem, Mass.) finally got the Rams on the board with just under 13 minutes remaining.  Bridgewater would add six more goals before the intermission to take a 12-1 lead and put the game out of reach.  Maloney tallied four of her five goals in the first half, including the finals three markers of the stanza.

The Bears were never threatened in the second half and outscored the Rams, 12-5, over the finals 30 minutes.  Bridgewater held a 50-14 shot advantage for the game as well as a 20-6 edge in controlled draws.

Jones finished with four assists and Lennon notched three to go along with their five goals, while Maloney added a pair of helpers.  Junior Kristin White (Pelham, Mass.) chipped in three goals and a game-high five assists.

Rijo led the Rams with four goals and an assist, while junior Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Stephanie Corrales each chipped in a single goal.

Senior Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) turned aside six shots for the Bears as she equaled Meghan Griffin's program record of 15 goaltending wins set in 2010

Sophomore Kelsey Turner (Billerica, Mass.) made 12 saves in a losing effort for the Rams who end the season 4-10 overall and 3-4 in the NEWLA.

Notes: Bridgewater is 33-1 versus NEWLA opponents since rejoining the league 2008…In addition to capturing four straight regular season titles, the Bears have also won three straight NEWLA Tournament championships and five overall.
