Sheehan Named NEWLA Defensive Player & Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Bridgewater State College sophomore midfielder Kasey Sheehan has been named the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week.

Sheehan posted six ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers to go along with two goals and two assists to help the Bears capture the program's second straight NEWLA Tournament title and fourth overall.

A native of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Sheehan notched three ground balls and a draw control while also scoring a goal in BSC's 23-10 semifinal win over Worcester State. She capped off the week with an outstanding championship game performance against Castleton State.  In the Bears 19-16 victory over the Spartans, Sheehan registered three ground balls, two draw controls and four caused turnovers to go along with two goals and two assists.

In 18 games during her rookie season, Sheehan tallied five goals, two assists, 34 ground balls, 11 draw controls and ten caused turnovers.

Bridgewater State wrapped up the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 14-4. Since rejoining the NEWLA prior to the start of the 2008 season, the Bears have won 18 straight games against conference opponents.
