Adrienne Berkland Named NEWLA Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior defender Adrienne Berkland has been named the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Defensive Player of the Week.

Berkland helped lead BSC to a 2-1 record last week on the defensive end as she registered nine caused turnovers, six ground balls, and three draw controls.

In a 22-2 win over Rhode Island College, Berkland tallied five caused turnovers, three ground balls and a draw control. She also notched two caused turnovers, two draw controls and a ground ball in BSC's 21-9 victory over Plymouth State as the Bears snapped a nine-game losing streak versus the Panthers.

Through 16 games this season, Berkland leads the NEWLA in caused turnovers with 31 as she is averaging 1.94 per game. She also has five goals and an assist to her credit along with 39 ground balls and 23 draw controls.

Bridgewater State wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 12-4.  The Bears finished a perfect 7-0 in NEWLA play as they captured the regular season title and the top seed for the conference tournament which gets underway on Wednesday, April 30th.

BSC hosts fourth seeded Westfield State College on Wednesday at 3:30.  The winner advances to the NEWLA championship game which will take place on Saturday at 2 PM.
