WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - In college women's lacrosse action, the Bridgewater State College Bears dropped an 18-17 decision to Allegheny College on Monday evening in West Palm Beach, Florida.
With the loss the Bears even their record at 1-1. The Gators picked up their first win of the season as they improved to 1-3. It marked the first coaching win at Allegheny for first-year head coach and former BSC women's lacrosse standout, Paula Habel.
The game went back and forth throughout its' duration. Allegheny jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before Bridgewater responded by scoring six of the next seven goals over a 14-minute span to take a 7-6 advantage.
Christina Zanic tallied two of her game-high six goals in the final minute of the first half to give the Gators a 10-9 advantage at the break.
Allegheny took that momentum into the second half as they netted the first four goals of the stanza and held BSC scoreless for the first 17 minutes.
Trailing by five goals (14-9), the Bears went on a 6-0 run over the next five minutes to jump on top, 15-14. Shannon Manning started and ended the run with two of her three goals on the day.
After the Gators tied the score on another goal by Zanic, BSC jumped ahead 17-15 with 5 ½ minutes remaining in the game on back-to-back goals by Jenny Jones and Patricia Maloney.
BSC, however, would not score again as Allegheny tallied the final three goals of the game with Zanic notching both the equalizer and the game-winner.
Manning added three assists to her three-goal performance as she finished with six points. Jones led the Bears with four goals while Alison Gugliotta netted three.
Zanic, Jensen Paterson and Ashley Hughes combined for 15 of the Gators' 18 goals. Paterson potted five goals while Hughes finished with five.
