Women's Basketball Falls to #6 Bowdoin in Cave Classic Title Game, 85-73

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Maddie Hasson (South Portland, Maine) earned tournament MVP honors to lead the #6 Bowdoin College women's basketball team to a 85-73 victory over host Bridgewater State University in the championship game of the 2019 BSU Cave Classic Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Tinsley Center.

The Polar Bears, who are ranked sixth in the WBCA Division III Poll and fifth in the D3hoops.com Poll, improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 1-3.

Hasson tallied a game-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds (four offensive), four assists and five steals in the championship game. She connected on 9 of 10 field goals and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Hasson shot 86% (12-14) from the floor for the tournament.

Junior guard Moira Train (Cumberland, Maine) also garnered All-Tournament honors for the Polar Bears. Train notched 16 points, four rebounds and three assists in the championship game, and averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds during the tournament.

Freshman guard Jordyn Lako (Attleboro, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with a career-high 18 points. Lako knocked down 4 of 5 three-point attempts and added three rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Sophomore guard Olivia Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) checked in with 14 points, two rebounds and three steals, while freshman guard Kylee Piché (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied a career-high 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting to go along with two assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Hannah Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) added 11 points, six rebounds (four offensive), four assists and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench for the Bears.

Olivia Dziadyk was named to the All-Tournament Team as she averaged 19.5 points and four steals during the tournament.

Bowdoin led 25-13 after one quarter of play, 48-27 at the break and 74-40 at the end of three. Bridgewater State, however, dominated the fourth quarter outscoring the Polar Bears 33-11 in the period to make things interesting.

A 21-4 run over a seven-minute stretch of the final period pulled the hosts to with ten (83-73) with a minute left to play. The Bears drained six three-pointers during the run including three from Hannah Dziadyk and two from Lako who scored ten of her 18 points in that seven-minute span. A jumper from sophomore Sela Kay (Los Angeles, Calif.) with 38 seconds remaining, however, sealed the win for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears shot 48.5% (32-66) for the game and went 7-for-20 (35%) from behind the arc and 14-for-20 (70%) at the free throw line. Bowdoin finished with a 44-20 advantage in points in the paint.

The Bears connected on just 38% of their field goals attempts, but went 10-for-17 (59%) from three-point range. Bridgewater also finished 15-for-24 (62.5%) at charity stripe.

The two teams combined for 48 turnovers.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday evening. The Bears entertain Rhode Island College at 5:30, while the Polar Bears host the University of New England at 7:30.
